A Note from Michael
--Pastor Michael Tomlinson

Have you ever had a “mountain top” experience where you felt like you were on top of the world? Emotional highs don’t seem to occur often enough though, and once they do "the valley" then seems that much lower!

The Prophet Elijah went through this kind of emotional high-low. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah had a showdown with the prophets of Baal and won in a flash with the Lord’s help. The victory sent his arch rival Jezebel into a tizzy and a binge for revenge. So, Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.

After a day’s journey into the desert, Elijah plopped down under a skinny tree and prayed that he might die. He had had enough. God, however, did not forsake him, and in fact, an angel of the Lord fed him twice. While in this valley of despair Elijah sought the Lord. First, he looked for Him in the wind, then the earthquake, and last, the fire.  But, it was after the fire he heard a gentle whisper, the Lord’s voice.

Sometimes, we expect God to speak to us when a big program or service blows our socks off, shakes us up, or puts on the heat.  But, it is in the calm of the valley that God can communicate most effectively with us.

I love mornings when all I hear are the birds just beginning to chirp and the sun is just beginning to come up over the horizon.  The quietness of that moment is when I am closest to my Savior.  Like Elijah, keep your ear attentive to that ever so small voice, that gentle whisper of His voice, and if you don’t hear it just wait……you will.

In His Loving Service,

Pastor Michael W. Tomlinson
